What is Biodiversity Net Gain?
The Environment Act 2021 required that all future developments produce at least a 10% uplift in biodiversity.
Development often results in impacts on and losses of nature. Therefore, mandatory BNG requires development to deliver more for nature, setting a requirement to increase biodiversity by a minimum of 10% compared to the baseline.
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is already included in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and must be included in the planning application process. Moreover, a 10% net gain will become a legal obligation for virtually all developments by November 2023.
